This briefs well (And you know what comes after that ;)) ...... Sometimes error management (defense) is the better part of valor. You can win by defending, if your opponent exhausts themselves- Fabian Defense, 1970's Pittsburg Steelers, Ali's Rope a Dope.
Great point Adam! There is value in establishing a defense when needed or using it to allow your enemy to wear themselves out, but even in the cases you cite, attacking, punching, and scoring was necessary to win.
